Coastal areas are oftentimes in need of harbors, but cannot
afford breakwaters using conventional design. PND addressed
this problem by aiding in the development and research of
"berm breakwaters." These porous structures use
relatively smaller uniformly-graded rock than conventional
designs, and thus are often less costly. The breakwater
at St. George Island in the Pribilofs, having weathered
some of the largest storms recorded in the Bering Sea, attests
to the success of this design. This harbor was built for
approximately half the cost of more customary designs and
is one of the first of its kind in the world.
