Approximately 1/4 acre of additional parking space was needed
at Harris Boat Harbor, and the access road required widening.
Other improvements called for paving, drainage and striping
layout. PND designed a 450-foot-long by 10-foot-high retaining
wall of geotextile fabric, faced with treated timber, for
an estimated $20 per square foot, compared to $50 per square
foot for a soldier-pile bulkhead with a reinforced-earth
wall. The geotextile had to be flexible enough to be wrapped
around the timber wall, while providing a uniform, flat
interface surface for subsequent layers of geotextile and
timber. A test section of wall was built to ensure strength
and constructibility. PND also provided contract administration
and inspection services for this project.
