Client:
Municipality of Anchorage
Owner: Municipality of Anchorage
Cost of Work: $1.8 million
The $1.8 million Tudor Trail project connects the University
Park area at Bragaw Street with the Campbell Park area and
provides needed pedestrian access across the busy five-lane
Tudor Road. The new Alaska Native Medical Center was built
adjacent to the highly-land-scaped and contoured, but functional,
trail; heavy traffic was anticipated by all types of users.
The project consists of about 3,000 feet of trail, a concrete
pedestrian underpass, landscaping improvements, and a 160-foot
clear-span curved steel box-girder bridge. PND was responsible
for survey, geotechnical, design and structural inspection
services for this project, and also provided liaison services
between the Anchorage Parks and Recreation Department, Alaska
Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, and
the Federal Highway Administration, which funded the project.
PND was also responsible for preparation of the ISTEA funding
requests and obtaining funding for the project through DOT/PF
and FHWA. The project was designed using DOT/PF and FHWA
design standards.
The bridge is a unique
bridge structure, and demonstrates the ability for PND to
communicate with a wide variety of individuals, government
agencies and the public. It also demonstrates PND's goal
to provide clients with the most cost-effective, aesthetic
solution possible. The bridge has won several national awards
for its design innovation in combining technical engineering
challenges with graceful solutions. Users enthusiastically
support the design and its integration into the land, lakes,
and existing trail system.
