A new drill rig designed for the North
Slope of Alaska is the largest rubber tire vehicle in
the world. At a weight of more than 3,000,000 pounds,
it utilizes welded steel components, including a backbone
of twin 6-foot by 10-foot box girders to form a completely
self-contained unit. It is capable of moving at speeds
of 2.5 mph in both longitudinal and transverse directions.
This mobility is made possible by six sets of bogies
each composed of twin 11-foot diameter rubber tires.
Each bogie is capable of supporting a load of 350 tons.
