The Juneau Chapters of the American Society
of Civil Engineers and the American Society of Professional
Engineers, together as the Alaska Capital Engineers, named
Dick Somerville, P.E., the 2007 Engineer of the Year. Dick
was nominated for the annual award by the Juneau Chapter
of ASCE. The nomination package cited his work on a number
of Southeast harbor projects.
“I don’t mind waking up each morning
with a host of challenges rattling around in my mind,”
he said. “It actually gets me to work early and I
look forward to this nearly every day.
“Many people find that sort of
behavior very odd. But for engineers, solving a problem
is natural for us and in that exercise we find our own reward.
To those who share these sentiments, engineering is more
than just a job – it is our calling,” he said.
